A message from our President
Reflections on the year behind us and the work ahead for Pennsylvania’s beer and beverage retailers.
As I sit down to write this year's message, I can't help but reflect on how much our industry has changed over the past decade and a half. Those of us who have spent our lives in this business have witnessed an incredible transformation in the Pennsylvania beer marketplace. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the importance of having a strong association fighting to protect and advance the interests of independent beer and beverage retailers.
This year marks an important milestone for our organization as we transition from the Malt Beverage Distributors Association to the Pennsylvania Beer and Beverage Retailers Association (PBBRA). While our name has changed to better reflect today’s marketplace and the products our members sell, our mission remains the same. Since 1936, this association has served as the unified voice of Pennsylvania’s independent retailers, and that commitment remains as strong today as ever.
As we reflect on the progress made over the past several years, it is remarkable to see how far our industry has come. Achievements such as RTD sales and permitting opportunities have helped modernize our businesses and provide new avenues for growth. These were goals that many in our industry spent decades pursuing, and today they are part of the everyday reality of doing business in Pennsylvania. If you would have told many of us just a few years ago that these opportunities would exist for distributors, we likely would have thought it was wishful thinking. Today, they are helping our members compete and grow in an evolving marketplace.
While those victories have helped position our industry for the future, the work of protecting those gains never stops. Over the past year, PBBRA successfully defeated efforts to further expand convenience store alcohol sales and weaken the independent retail system that has served Pennsylvania consumers and businesses well for generations. At the same time, we continued to focus on creating value for our members by securing partnerships such as our DoorDash program, helping retailers adapt to changing consumer expectations and providing new tools to compete in an increasingly digital world.
These successes serve as a reminder that a strong association is not measured solely by the legislation it passes. It is measured by the harmful proposals it prevents, the opportunities it creates for members, and its ability to ensure that independent retailers continue to have a strong voice in Harrisburg.
Like many of you, I recognize that today’s challenges are different than they were just a few years ago. Consumer preferences continue to evolve. Beer consumption trends are changing. Inflation, labor costs, operating expenses, regulatory uncertainty, and increased competition are creating pressures that many retailers feel every day. These challenges are real, and they are being felt across the Commonwealth.
Despite these headwinds, I remain cautiously optimistic about the future. One thing I have learned throughout my years in this industry is that independent retailers are resilient. We have adapted before, and we will adapt again. The businesses that make up our membership are innovative, hardworking, and deeply rooted in their communities. While the marketplace may continue to change, I firmly believe our industry’s best days are still ahead of us.
As we look forward, PBBRA will continue to focus on protecting the interests of our members while identifying new opportunities for growth. Whether that means defending against harmful legislation, advancing sensible reforms, exploring new product opportunities, expanding member benefits, or ensuring our industry’s voice is heard in Harrisburg, our team remains committed to the work that has defined this association for nearly ninety years.
None of this work would be possible without the support of our members. Your investment in PBBRA allows us to remain a strong and effective advocate for independent beer and beverage retailers throughout Pennsylvania. I encourage you to renew your membership and remain actively engaged in our association. Together, we have accomplished a great deal, and together, we will continue to shape the future of our industry.
